The last month of July 2014, Education for Life NGO President, Javier Collado, had the opportunity to visit Viet Nam UNESCO in Ha Noi. During the event, Mrs. Katherine Muller Marin, UNESCO Chief Representative in Vietnam, was talking about the coordination that UNESCO has been enhanced between schools and local authorities on Education for Sustainable Development. She also expressed the importance to change the traditional education focused in concepts and terminologies, by increasing participatory methodologies to make communities more prepared, resilient and sustainable.
In this sense, schools and their surrounding communities are under constant threat. The Ministry of Education and Training (MOET), UNESCO and Samsung Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) Initiative in Viet Nam has made significant steps to create an enabling environment for schools and communities to identify their own risks and threats and to develop and implement joint plans. Most importantly, the Initiative promotes the need for preparing bioliterate citizens who understand Biodiversity Conservation and Restoration is one of the most relevant tools for disaster preparedness and climate change mitigation. “Bioliteracy is the ability to understand the language of life. Bioliterate citizens are those capable of developing in harmony with nature,” expressed Mrs. Muller Marin. “Under the guidance of the Ministry of Education and Training, Viet Nam Man and Biosphere Programme, UNESCO and the Biosphere Reserve Management Board, children have increased their knowledge on the challenges linked to Education for Sustainable Development such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and other environmental issues.“
In the meeting, they also talked about the technical consultation on Global Citizenship Education and the UNESCO World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development – Learning Today for a Sustainable Future which will take place on 10-12 November in Japan with the occasion of the end of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development.
